Il me dit\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Vous voyez, l\u00e0, il y a le BONHEUR\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Il v\u00e9cut sous tente de sa naissance jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ses 18 ans, nomadisant dans le d\u00e9sert lybien avec sa famille, errant \u00e7a et l\u00e0 au gr\u00e9 de possibles embauches pour travaux saisonniers.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Les beaux moments de sa vie se pass\u00e8rent l\u00e0, loin des villes, s\u00e9curis\u00e9 par les vastes \u00e9tendues travers\u00e9es par le vent et \u00e9cras\u00e9es de soleil, \u00e0 l\u2019air libre la nuit sous une couverture \u00e9toil\u00e9e. Quatre murs lui rognaient les ailes.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">D\u2019origine arabe, de tradition musulmane, descendant de la lign\u00e9e d\u2019un khalife (compagnon du proph\u00e8te), sa famille \u00e9migra au 18<sup>e<\/sup> si\u00e8cle \u00e0 Kairouan, ville sainte.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Ses anc\u00eatres, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la venue des Fran\u00e7ais, poss\u00e9daient des terres autour de la ville. Son a\u00efeul remplissait le r\u00f4le d\u2019\u00e0del (sorte d\u2019huissier). Nous all\u00e2mes identifier sa tombe dans ce cimeti\u00e8re d\u2019une rare sobri\u00e9t\u00e9, le long des remparts.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">L\u2019ensemble du rouleau transcrit le souvenir d\u2019une vie qu\u2019il m\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 donn\u00e9 de conna\u00eetre. Tant ils me semblaient transparents, je les ai symbolis\u00e9s par l\u2019eau, la mer.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Solitaire d\u2019abord dans une barque, croisant ensuite de grands navires paresseux, flottant dans la qui\u00e9tude d\u2019une mer d\u2019huile, passager d\u2019un cargo bond\u00e9, essuyant des temp\u00eates, p\u00eacheur \u00e0 la ligne sur un l\u00e9ger rafiot. Et de s\u2019\u00e9battre dans les vagues par temps clair\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">La derni\u00e8re s\u00e9quence est l\u2019homme m\u00e9moire, diaphane, retournant dans son pass\u00e9 \u00e0 la nage. Mais l&rsquo;exp\u00e9rience la plus authentique du roman n&rsquo;est pas celle d&rsquo;un initi\u00e9 irlandais, elle est plut\u00f4t celle d&rsquo;un lecteur qui, ignorant tout de ce monde et \u00e9loign\u00e9 du labyrinthe dublinois, doit trouver ses propres points de rep\u00e8res pour se frayer un chemin dans l&rsquo;\u00e9pais brouillard de Joyce. Comme Ulysse lui-m\u00eame, d\u00e9tourn\u00e9 de sa route par les vagues de la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e, chaque lecteur de l&rsquo;<em>Ulysse <\/em>de Joyce doit trouver son propre chemin dans le roman.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Le projet de Joyce repose sur l&rsquo;id\u00e9e qu\u2019on atteint \u00e0 l&rsquo;universel en passant par le microcosme. La nouvelle version comprend des milliers de changements par rapport \u00e0 la pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, certains minimes, d&rsquo;autres essentiels. Les nuances de chaque mot ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pes\u00e9es, en tenant compte non seulement du contexte historique et culturel de l&rsquo;Irlande du d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle, mais aussi des fonctions &#8211; symboliques, phon\u00e9tiques, linguistiques, voire visuelles &#8211; que chaque mot est appel\u00e9 \u00e0 remplir dans la grande machine d&rsquo;<em>Ulysse<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Les notes d\u00e9taill\u00e9es qui accompagnent le texte r\u00e9v\u00e8lent implicitement l&rsquo;\u00e9norme effort intellectuel qui a pr\u00e9sid\u00e9 \u00e0 cette traduction et l&rsquo;extraordinaire filtre philologique par lequel est pass\u00e9 chaque mot choisi. En tant que guide vers les nombreux contextes du roman, il a peu d\u2019\u00e9quivalents dans n\u2019importe quelle langue, y compris l&rsquo;anglais.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Car les contextes sont en effet nombreux. Le premier, celui de Dublin en 1904, sc\u00e8ne sur laquelle se d\u00e9roule l&rsquo;action d&rsquo;<em>Ulysse<\/em>, n&rsquo;est pas facile \u00e0 reconstituer, d&rsquo;autant qu&rsquo;il ne s&rsquo;agit pas d&rsquo;un seul contexte mais d&rsquo;une s\u00e9rie de contextes qui se chevauchent. <em>Ulysse<\/em> est souvent interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 comme le roman par excellence de la m\u00e9tropole moderne. Mais Dublin en 1904 n&rsquo;a pas grand-chose \u00e0 voir avec les grandes villes des modernistes, le Londres de Woolf ou le Paris de Proust. Ce contexte tellement sp\u00e9cifique est d\u00e9crit de mani\u00e8re lucide et brillante dans un essai introductif du folkloriste Diarmuid \u00d3 Gioll\u00e1in. S&rsquo;appuyant sur des sources extraordinairement riches mais peu connues des sp\u00e9cialistes du modernisme litt\u00e9raire, \u00d3 Gioll\u00e1in y reconstruit les diff\u00e9rentes couches de la culture populaire \u00e0 Dublin au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00d3 Gioll\u00e1in d\u00e9peint une ville o\u00f9 la culture paysanne s\u00e9culaire, avec son rapport \u00e9troit \u00e0 la nature et \u00e0 l&rsquo;agriculture, et ses rites superstitieux et pa\u00efens, est encore tr\u00e8s vive dans les faubourgs de la ville, \u00e0 peu de kilom\u00e8tres des lieux o\u00f9 Joyce a pass\u00e9 son enfance. Dublin est \u00e0 la fois une ville marqu\u00e9e par la faim et la pauvret\u00e9\u00a0; une ville dans laquelle nombre des grandes demeures du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle ont \u00e9t\u00e9 transform\u00e9es en bas-fonds\u00a0; une ville provinciale de la Grande-Bretagne qui consid\u00e8re Londres comme sa capitale ; une ville domin\u00e9e par un catholicisme petit-bourgeois qui voit en Rome son propre centre et le foyer de la renaissance culturelle irlandaise, qui ambitionne de devenir la capitale d&rsquo;un futur \u00c9tat ind\u00e9pendant..<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">T\u00e9moin de ce m\u00e9lange, le r\u00e9pertoire de musique populaire qui caract\u00e9rise <em>Ulysse<\/em>\u00a0: op\u00e9rettes italiennes, vieilles ballades irlandaises, chansons de music-halls anglais, hymnes en latin &#8211; musiques extr\u00eamement diverses mais qui coexistent dans l&rsquo;esprit des Dublinois. L&rsquo;essai d\u2019\u00d3 Gioll\u00e1in m\u00e9rite d&rsquo;\u00eatre lu attentivement par tous les sp\u00e9cialistes de la litt\u00e9rature moderne ; il n&rsquo;est pourtant que la premi\u00e8re des nombreuses cl\u00e9s de lecture d&rsquo;<em>Ulysse<\/em> propos\u00e9es par l&rsquo;\u00e9dition de Terrinoni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Comme on le sait, le roman raconte une histoire transversale qui se d\u00e9roule en une seule journ\u00e9e, offrant un catalogue d\u00e9taill\u00e9 de lieux, de personnes, d&rsquo;objets, d&rsquo;\u00e9v\u00e9nements : d\u00e9c\u00e8s, naissances, vie politique, d\u00e9sirs, r\u00eaves, relations commerciales, culture \u00e9lev\u00e9e et culture populaire, musique, v\u00eatements, boissons, nourriture. Le but n&rsquo;est pas seulement de repr\u00e9senter les manifestations imm\u00e9diates de tout cela, mais aussi d\u2019en retrouver les \u00e9l\u00e9ments constitutifs et les origines. Lorsque Bloom ouvre le robinet et que l&rsquo;eau coule, Joyce nous renseigne sur \u00a0tout le travail humain et naturel qui rend possible ce miracle\u00a0:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u00ab\u00a0Elle vient ? Le roman ouvre et diss\u00e8que l&rsquo;esprit dans ses diff\u00e9rentes composantes, notamment les traces de culture, de politique, de publicit\u00e9, qui y c\u00f4toient les souvenirs personnels et les d\u00e9sirs intimes. Il en va de m\u00eame pour le langage, qui est d\u00e9compos\u00e9 en ses \u00e9l\u00e9ments individuels : le langage parl\u00e9 en sons et le langage \u00e9crit en lettres. Les lettres et les sons ont eux aussi leur odyss\u00e9e dans <em>Ulysse<\/em>. Ce qui signifie que, pour chaque mot, le roman propose plusieurs contextes possibles : socioculturel, psychologique, linguistique, etc. Habituellement, les \u00e9ditions critiques en privil\u00e9gient un seul (en mettant l&rsquo;accent sur le nationalisme irlandais, par exemple, ou sur les r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 Hom\u00e8re).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">L&rsquo;exploit remarquable de Terrinoni est de maintenir tous ces niveaux en vie dans ses notes, sans en faire pr\u00e9valoir aucun, et en \u00e9vitant \u2013 par son ton direct et enjou\u00e9 \u2013 le risque que le texte en soit submerg\u00e9 : bref, un s\u00e9rieux philologique maximal, sans concessions \u00e0 la p\u00e9danterie ni aux minuties ; l&rsquo;attention accord\u00e9e aux d\u00e9tails historiques concrets y coexiste avec un respect quasi mystique pour le monde imaginaire de Joyce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>\u00c9dition incomparable <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: times new roman, times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Terrinoni semble partir du principe qu&rsquo;<em>Ulysse<\/em> n&rsquo;est pas seulement un roman mais, r\u00e9ellement, un monde entier. La t\u00e2che de l&rsquo;\u00e9diteur-traducteur consiste alors \u00e0 amplifier, d\u00e9couvrir et dessiner la carte de ce monde si complexe. L&rsquo;\u00e9diteur a pris au s\u00e9rieux tous les aspects de l&rsquo;univers de Joyce, y compris les plus \u00e9sot\u00e9riques tels que la num\u00e9rologie. La note qui accompagne le premier mot du roman \u2013 \u00ab\u00a0<em>stately<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb en anglais, \u00ab\u00a0<em>statuario<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0 <em>[= majestueux comme une statue\u00a0\u00bb, NdE]<\/em> dans la traduction de Terrinoni &#8211; couvre quatre pages et constitue un court essai sur la m\u00e9thode d&rsquo;<em>Ulysse<\/em>. Le r\u00e9sultat est un atlas &#8211; de valeur \u00e9norme non seulement pour les Italiens mais pour quiconque d\u00e9sire approfondir sa connaissance du texte de Joyce &#8211; de tous les mondes, et ils sont nombreux, qu\u2019Ulysse rassemble et englobe. Si le <em>ius solis<\/em> \u00e9tait valable pour la litt\u00e9rature, <em>Ulysse<\/em>, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crit en grande partie \u00e0 Trieste, devrait \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un roman italien.
